Phenomenal Women Book Club in the New Orleans area was founded in October 2007 by moderator Makeda Peterson. PWBC currently has 30 phenomenal members who enjoy reading and socializing but have also worked hard in its first three years established to make a difference. Meetings are held once per month, on the second Saturday of each month usually for 2-3 hours to discuss the book of the month, socialize, and cover club business (community service, fundraisers, literary events, upcoming books to discuss). The members range in age from 21-67; which creates a wide variety of responses and opinions about the books and questions. PWBC is committed to encouraging and promoting good books by providing book reviews on amazon.com and our website of books the group discusses. We read a variety of genres; poetry, fiction, self help, inspirational/motivational, historical, romance, biographies, street fiction and mystery written by or about African Americans. Each month's meeting is hosted by a Phenomenal Woman who adds her own flavor to the discussion questions, theme, setting, and food. It is our effort to develop a networking sisterhood with women of color from all ages, backgrounds, and professions.
PWBC is also dedicated in performing community services and has started a non-profit to promote literacy, literary events, and other necessities in our community. Together we have been able to raise more than 1900 book donations, dental supplies, and more than $4700 from V-Day performances for organizations that help women and children in the greater New Orleans area and women of the Congo and Haiti. Some members also put their time and energy to run in the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure.
